Gorillas in the midst: Rangers return to Congo wildlife park
It has been a long and painful wait for rangers at Virunga National Park in the Congo. The rangers fled the park 15 months ago because of fighting between troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo and rebel forces. leaving behind the mountain gorillas who call the park home.
This week, after a groundbreaking deal between the rebels and the government, the Congolese Wildlife Conservation Society and the rangers returned to the park, and found a welcome surprise - a gorilla family, the first of what they hope will be several in and around the park.
Three gorilla families spotted this week by rangers and an Associated Press television crew is the first of what they hope will be many found in and around the park. A monthlong census is now underway to give the world its first understanding of the status and health of the endangered gorillas since fighting broke out near the Mikeno volcano, home to an estimated 190 of the world's 700 mountain gorillas.
