Name: Give Sex Workers Legal Rights!!! They are people too.
Category: Business - General
Type: This group is open and anyone is free to join and invite friends.
About: Okay so everyone is saying that they should not legalise prostitution for 2010 in Cape Town. No matter whether or not prostitution is legalised or not, people are still going to be working as sex workers. Prostitution and the selling of sex is very mush apart of our world in this day and age. I am by no means promoting prostitution at all but I do empathise with the people that are that desperate to earn a living that the only way that they can do it is by selling their bodies.

Imagine being a prostitute... You have to take your clothes off and accommodate the sexual needs of your client. Yes, you may make a lot of money but imagine the thought of illegally arriving at some random's house and allowing them to have sex with you any which way they want to. If you think of it this way, it seems okay. The sex workers are choosing their life right? So it should be fine, why should it be legalised if it is happening anyway right??? Well the truth is, without it being legal; prostitutes have no legal rights... And believe me when I say, prostitutes are raped every single day, by clients and by acquaintances that know that they are prostitutes. They do not have a leg to stand on when they are raped or abused as prostitution is illegal.

If it were legalised, the woman and men that are sex workers would have rights just as any other profession. With the growing HIV/AIDS pandemic at our doorsteps it is important that people who work as sex workers be properly protected and their status' be regulated. If prostitution is legalised, there will be greater control over the standards and morals that go along with being a sex worker. Example such as "no, means no" or that "condoms have to be worn at all times".

Legalisation will also give a voice to the people whom are forced into prostitution through the violent and abusive means of human trafficking. South Africa is home to so many victims of human trafficking, mostly from Africa and Eastern Europe. Human trafficking is terrible and by legalising prostitution the need for black market sex workers will drop, as the system would be regulated. People are still people and humanity should stand ground to anyone, no matter what their profession. Sexual harassment in the work place is such a big issue in South Africa and people get punished daily for it, surely it should be the same for sex workers, at the end of the day, they too are trying to make ends meet.

Let's us, the ones with voices, give voice to the voiceless and speak up against the mental and physical abuse of prostitution. It won’t do us any harm; it will only improve the lives of the desperate!!!

Let us all start a movement, speak about it and the conditions for legalisation and what it would mean to those at need. People need to be educated. It takes only one drop to start a ripple

  • Absolutely agree, by legalizing prostitution, one can give the people who have chosen this profession protection through law enforcement and at the same time it can be checked if is is a voluntary decision to be working as such. Also, the authorities can then make regular screening for any related illnesses compulsory.
