3 stowaways thrown into sea
23/06/2008 11:23 - (SA)
Maputo - Three stowaways were allegedly thrown into the high seas off the Mozambican coast from a Chinese ship they had illegally boarded in their bid to escape xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
The national television channel, Televisao de Mozambique, said in a report on Monday that the three men - a Mozambican and two Tanzanians - had boarded the ship at the SA coastal town of Richards Bay.
After being thrown off the ship, the men swam to the coastline but one died during the journey.
One of the victims, David Chambal, a Mozambican, told the television channel that their ordeal started on June 04, when they clandestinely boarded the ship.
He said the ship's crew knew of the presence of the three men a week before the start of the journey.
Chambal told the station that they were given life jackets and drinking water before they were thrown off the ship.
