3 stowaways thrown into sea
23/06/2008 11:23 - (SA)

Maputo - Three stowaways were allegedly thrown into the high seas off the Mozambican coast from a Chinese ship they had illegally boarded in their bid to escape xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The national television channel, Televisao de Mozambique, said in a report on Monday that the three men - a Mozambican and two Tanzanians - had boarded the ship at the SA coastal town of Richards Bay.

After being thrown off the ship, the men swam to the coastline but one died during the journey.

One of the victims, David Chambal, a Mozambican, told the television channel that their ordeal started on June 04, when they clandestinely boarded the ship.

He said the ship's crew knew of the presence of the three men a week before the start of the journey.

Chambal told the station that they were given life jackets and drinking water before they were thrown off the ship.

  • Dear Group members. i am so glad that i found this group as i was searching for a local platform where i could participate and also share my views.
I am Monica Heynes, Founder of The Foreign Voice, a media based NPO, that willmainly be concentrating on telling the untold stories of all foreigners, whether they are from the Mother continent or from any other continent.
The Foreign Voice will be hosting the inaugral festival called Celebrating the world in South Africa. This festival to take place but due to certain formalities that we still await, we cannot advise the dates yet.
The intention with the festival is to help South Africans understand that being a foreigner is not being a black foreigner. Foreigners in South Africa are Germans, Italians, etc and so many other nationalities. Our African brothers and sisters are from the Mother Continent and we can take a drive and end up in their country.
The Foreign Voice will publish a monthly newspaper /online magazine that will really connect people in and outside South Africa. It will tell stories about how people ended up being refugees here. It will tell about certain cultures and why they behave in a certain manner. It will discuss issues like we should let go of the tolerance behaviour and get into stopping being ignorant and resistant to change.
Our webiste is still under construction but you can reach me on monica.heynes@myvirtualworker.co.za or monica.heynes@gmail.com. I am still looking for personsthat can help me locate trustworthey people that can represent the different foreign groups in South Africa. Inbox me and then i can liaise with them.

    This group is fantastic...

    Monica

We are all foreigners in our own skin sometimes..do we burn ourselves cause we dont understand or dont know who we are...we deal with our issues and start loving ourselves again...

  • I cry when I see how these people are treated. That is why I'm thinking of fixing the smallholding I have in Gouda so that in case of these attacks I will be able to accomodate them. Any one that needs more information about what I'm busy doing and visit Website http://hhhgouda.webs.com

  • Thank You all for the solidarity. Its at least gratifying to know that there are still a few good people left in the world, The attacks were indeed horrible and it makes me event ashamed to be African to some extent. Indeed this must come to an end or else we wont have much of a future as a continent!!!

  • People this really touched and moved me.It made me soo sad to realise that our fellow men and women were fighting the outsiders. Are we not the same?I mean we may be different in cultures but we are all Africans by the virtue of birth.Instead of uniting we proved to the other continents that we are jealousy and would never be a helping hand.I keep asking myself what it really is that we want first it was xenophobia en just recently the taxi drivers were fighting against the new buses. We will be hosting the 2010 world cup so I think we ought to have respect for people irregardless of where they are from. Why are the people from America en the whole overseas called TOURISTS but our own africans foreigners?
