Deceitful Vanities

A wise man once uttered in this wise; “vanity of vanities, all is vanity”. For long I struggled to comprehend the aforementioned quote; how can everything be vain? I could understand how acquisitions such as jewelry, fancy cars, and mansions to name a common few; can be considered as being vanities. But when one says everything is vanity; could it be that even live itself is vanity?

It is very easy and arguably natural for a person to advocate those things they pleasure themselves in. hence the majority of fairly looking people wouldn’t hesitate to discriminate that which is considered unattractive. Beauty alongside money are some of the most desired and cherished vanities; our societies continuously perpetuate the acquisition of the aforementioned as the paramount of goals. Nonetheless, it would be a lie not to mention that we are attracted by beauty and wealth, the most of us at the least. Some people wouldn’t wear the same outfit twice in a month if it could be avoided, some women wouldn’t even dare to step outside - over the threshold of their homes without any makeup on, and the majority of men wouldn’t even dare to consider a woman unless she meets certain socially accepted standards of fairness. But all these desires, in truth, are vanities, far from the natural order. Hunger, sensations, and emotions are perfectly natural. Yet the same cannot be said of vanity, it is the lustof the flesh.

Therefore, all our vain desires are attributes which were conditioned upon us by our societies. Whilst in our tender ages, we were lead to believe, adhere to, and embrace those things which are not necessarily part of our nature. Some people feel incomplete or incompetent without the things which society aspires for. Hence some people would lie, cheat, steal, and even commit murder to acquire the vanities of this world. The thing which societies fail to realise is that vanities are like the wind; they are just passing by, and can never be captured. Clearly vanities result in some sort of pleasure or people wouldn’t bother themselves with them. Whether it is to boast or to acquire some sort of solace, every person has their own vain desires or ambitions. There are numerous vain things in this world, and numbering them would be a laborious and cumbersome effort.

If everything is vanity, then life itself is also vanity. Therefore, the question of our purpose as human beings arises. If life is vanity, then what is our purpose? Truly speaking; it is only through finding our true purpose as human beings that we can nullify the vanities of life. And what is that purpose you may ask? Well, I believe that humanity and everything on earth was created for the honor and glory of Him who created them (Jesus Christ). It is only through seeking companionship with the almighty that we can find true meaning and purpose; everything else is vanity, and the searching of vanity can never be complete. “Everything is vanity, vanity of vanities.”

May God, Christ keep and bless you
