Animal Rescue Organisation (est. 1986) is a registered non-profit organisation, running 3 mobile clinics and a fully equipped hospital in Ottery, Cape Town, specifically for the welfare of township and informal settlement animals.
Our services include Primary Health Care, Sterilisation and Youth Education.
The Animal Rescue Organisation treats approximately 20 000 sick and suffering township animals per year and is dependent on public funds to continue this work.
The mandate of the Animal Rescue Organisation is "to relieve the suffering of township animals", and in so doing our staff sterilise all animals brought to the organisation.
News from the Animal Rescue Team:
Animal Rescue has sterilised 1627 animals in 2008 and hopes to increase this figure significantly in 2009.
The hospital team is headed by veterinarian Dr Roelof van der Merwe and the 3 Mobile Clinics are staffed by qualified Animal Welfare Assistants trained by Dr Roelof and given clearance to work by the South African Veterinary Council. The Animal Rescue Hospital is registered with the SA Vet Council and is governed as such.
Animal Rescue will only treat animals belonging to those who earn R5000 and less per month. This is because approximately 50% of Capetonians are in this bracket and desperately need care for their animals.
Paws for Thought Sterilisation Campaign:
The Paws for Thought Sterilisation Campaign began in 1994 with the Animal Rescue Organisation. We are proud to announce that we are still busy raising funds for this initiative over 10 years later! If you wish to donate towards the work of Animal Rescue or the Paws for Thought Campaign, please use the bank details provided. We will require an email address from you to send you a formal thank you letter.
In 2008, ARO sterilised over 1627 dogs and cats from townships and informal settlements around the Cape area. Sterilisation is an essential operation which requires that the animal stays in hospital for a short while but this procedure will prevent the breeding and birth of many unwanted animals.
The only way we can stop the abuse and over breeding is to sterilize as many animals as possible. Your support will help to make this possible!
