Fezray

Band Description	FEZRAY is a five-piece folk- and punk-inspired rock band from Cape Town. The band members are: Tanya Potgieter (vocals), Ivan Sadler (lead guitar), Pedro von Wielligh (rhythm guitar), Chris Truter (bass), and Jason Walter (drums). The mighty FEZRAY had its humble beginnings in 2008, when Tanya Potgieter and Ivan Sadler started collaborating on songs, with the intention of later recruiting other musicians to start a band. With Ivan’s experience as a songwriter – gained over the 16 years he has been playing guitar – and Tanya’s fondness for melodic vocals, songs began to emerge. The lyrics, in Afrikaans and English, were also a combined effort, and include musings on everyday life and its complications, love and love lost, tales of insanity, and a tongue-in-cheek murder ballad thrown in for good measure. Fast-forward a few hard-working months and the music-loving duo has evolved into a full rock band. Armed with a setlist of six completed songs, Tanya and Ivan recruited 3 additional musicians: Pedro von Wielligh, Chris Truter, and John Murray on drums. There followed the first FEZRAY gig at the Mercury Lounge in Cape Town, where FEZRAY supported rockabilly four-piece ‘Three More White Guys’. John departed to pursue musical dreams of his own, while Pedro and Chris liked what they heard and decided to commit themselves to the eclectic and energy-filled rock songs. The band then recruited former ‘I Villain’ drummer Jason Walters (also from ‘Ill System’, ‘Genetalia’, ‘Magic of Pegasus’). Like Jason, all the other guys in FEZRAY have previously played in bands. Pedro was in ‘Mindcream’, ‘Brollox en Bittergal’ and ‘Wilde Als’, while Chris was part of numerous other projects like ‘The Rash’, ‘Anima’, and ‘All Star Collectors’. He also had a stint as bassist for alternative CT rock band, ‘The Sleepers’. As for Ivan, he was the guitarist and primary song writer in both ‘I Villain’ and surf rock outfit ‘Krakatoa’. In contrast to her fellow, more experienced band members, FEZRAY is Tanya’s first band. Working on expanding their collection of songs continues to be a main priority, always keeping in mind their aim of writing music that they themselves would like to hear. Fervent efforts to record an album in the near future are also currently underway, as the members of FEZRAY do what they do best while bestowing merriment on all who want to listen, and leaving good spirits and a sense of illumination in their wake.
