| Band Description |
Nungarin is one of the freshest bands to emerge from the South African music scene. The Cape Town based trio have been together since 2007 and have gone from strength to strength.
From the start they were lucky enough
to be given the platform that all aspiring musicians strive for.
Their natural blend of unique influences and musical
abilities has created a genre unto themselves. With a multitude of instruments between them, they have created an eclectic mix of music that separates them from the pack.
Drawing on influences from across the musical spectrum, they have managed to mold together a unique sound that is a pleasure to listen to, and helps give each song a
unique flavor.
Sean Thijsse
Violin, Keyboards, Bass, Backup Vocals
Sean grew up with music all around him. His Grandfather played the cello and his mother a trained pianist. Naturally Sean and his brother both adopted various instruments, emerging as two very talented young adults.
Sean, the youngest member of the band, enjoys the finer side of music. His classical influence is best portrayed
through his violin mastery, an instrument with which he hones his talents. Sean also contributes keyboards and
bass, rounding the 3 piece off with varied modes of play.
In his spare time, Sean retreats into the ocean to enjoy the awesome power of nature. He does so in a sailing boat, a Thijsse family past time.
Gregory Thijsse
6 & 12 string Guitars, weissenborn, banjo, Vocals, Harmonica, Lyrics
He makes kite-boarding seem effortless; in fact, he makes most sports seem effortless. Greg is a passionate person, and has successfully featured internationally as a kite-boarder, and locally is renowned for much more.
His passion for life has driven him to make the best of every opportunity, and when he decided to form a band
with long time friend Dominic de Jesus, he knew it would be a worthwhile challenge.
Greg’s love for music and performance provides a strong central figure for a freshly innovative group. He delivers strong vocals, and ensnares the audience as he tells them stories of love and hope amidst the motions of modern life.
He enjoys writing, and along with Dom, produces fine ideas for the story telling of the music.
Dominic de Jesus
Drums, Yiridaki, Lyrics, Percussion
Dom smiles a lot, and it’s tough not to smile with him. He has an easygoing approach to life, and love for all
things ethnic. Having started out musically with the Yiridaki, or didgeridoo, as well as the deeply spiritual djembe drum, Dom soon moved on to traditional drumming.
His beats are simple and to the point, offering the listener an ease of rhythm. He fills the bands resonance with deep, powerful vibrations, taking the audience on a journey through the earthier melodies of forgotten times.
Dom’s love of poetry lends to the enticing lyrics, which are sung by Greg and stem from Dom’s creative writing.
Together Dom and Greg mesh together thoughts on life, love and whatever else comes to mind.
“With a drummer that doubles up on a didgeridoo, these boys have a certain uniqueness
about them that suggests they will go far…based on what we heard tonight this is no outrageous
prediction” (Zula Sound Bar)”
After their 1st show they were invited to play at Rocking the Daisies 2007 (One of South Africa’s biggest green rock festivals). From there they were invited to play at The Natural and Organic exhibition at the CTICC 2007,
Rise up and Rock new years eve festival in the Transkei 2007, The SAA open 2007, Rocking the Daisies 2008 (with attendance peaking at 12000 people over the course of the event), and the Red Skei new years eve festival 2008. This, along with countless other shows alongside some of SA’s top musicians, shows that the band is well on their way. |
