21st Century Tragedy (2006 - …)
Grapes of Wrath
Take a hike down Paarl Main Road and you’ll see the typical Wineland scene – and the ironic backdrop for a band that was born to play intense music. While everyone was sitting apathetically on their stoeps, five close friends born, bred and bored in the Boland, decided to try their chords at a genre of music that they loved: Metal.
Blood, sweat and too many beers…
What was once a cacophonic gathering of fiends back in ’06, soon became a serious battle of blood, sweat and beers once the guys realised they’re riffs were pretty damn good and hey, there’s something there… With Brendon on vocals, the brothers Arno and Tiago on guitars, Wez on bass and Murph on drums, 21st Century Tragedy was now rearing to go. Their sound had matured into something of its own: Elements of thrash, black and death metal shredded into such melodic mayhem, the guys knew they simply had to provoke a pit somewhere out there. After a year and a half of solid practising and song writing (not without the odd piss-up), it was time to go live.
It’s a-live
In October ’07, 21st Century Tragedy had their debut gig at the Cape Sound Battle of the Bands. Since then they’ve had a steady line-up of gigs in and around Cape Town, notably the Metal4Africa Summerfest DVD recording show, the Hammer the Masses Launch gigs (including a headline spot at the Joburg show) as well as slots on the Detonation Tour Cape Town Leg… To name a few!
On the recording side, two songs have been recorded with producer James Copeland, one of which, Awaken This, features on Hammer The Masses Vol I compilation CD released by Dual Records. The compilation features some of the best SA metal and hard rock. Another song, The Fall, was made available for free download on the band’s Myspace page.
Their notably blood curdling, bone wrenching live shows secured Tragedy a booking contract with Dual Entertainment, an interview on FireAngelDesign online mag and most importantly, a growing fan base.
Corpses Diem
Currently 21st Century Tragedy are dipping their pens in blood and writing some new material for an album. They are also recording an EP slated for a year-end release. In line with this, they will launch their website and produce fresh limited-edition merch.
Confirmed slots in high-profile gigs in the near future: Battle for Devil Driver Cape Town (Sept. ’08), the Dual Entertainment Birthday gig and a spot on the Hammer The Masses Vol II compilation CD. |
